Sir Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a human rights advocate and attorney, has cautioned Minister Nyesom Wike that the Church must continue to be revered and that no one, regardless of political affiliation, should bring the altar down into the depths of vanity and conceit.

He said Wike’s recent behavior was an unseemly show of political haughtiness in a place of worship.

According to a report by Vanguard, Ejiofor’s rebuke was in response to Wike’s recent contentious statements made at a church service at St. James Anglican Church in Asokoro, Abuja.

He claimed that Wike was insulting the sanctity of religion by turning the pulpit into a political theater. In a now-viral video, the minister accused religious leaders of almost bringing down Nigeria in 2023 and asserted that Peter Obi can never serve as president.

Ejiofor, a Knight of St. Christopher in the Anglican Communion, underlined that Wike’s remarks were not just careless but also took place in a setting intended for spiritual adoration rather than political promotion.

He disclosed that Wike ignored many subliminal warnings from church leaders to be polite and wrap up his remarks throughout the ceremony.

He emphasized that religious places must continue to be apolitical and denounced the act as a flagrant violation of Christian principles and social mores.

In his words, “Sadly, this descent into political showmanship did not occur at a rally or campaign venue, but within the hallowed walls of a church—a space consecrated for worship, reflection, and divine reverence.”

“The house of God must remain sacred. No one, no matter their political standing, should drag the altar into the gutters of ego and arrogance.
