The political atmosphere in Bayelsa State continues to heat up following a controversial decision by Governor Douye Diri to reportedly bar the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike from entering the state.
In a swift reaction, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Bayelsa, George Turner declared that the party would give Wike a rousing welcome should he choose to visit.
In an interview shared on SYMFONI TV, Turner emphasized the supremacy of the Nigerian Constitution and criticized any attempt to restrict the movement of citizens especially high-ranking government officials like Wike.
“But that is not to say that if Minister Wike wants to come to Bayelsa and we get information that Wike wants to come to Bayelsa, we will roll out the drums to welcome him,” Turner said.
“We can’t survive like that in this country, we cannot. The constitution must remain supreme and we all owe a duty to promote that constitution and ensure that it reigns supreme.”
Turner’s comments have sparked debate across political lines with APC supporters hailing his defense of constitutional rights while PDP loyalists accuse the opposition of attempting to politicize state sovereignty.
Tensions between Governor Diri, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, and Wike have escalated in recent months amid growing national political realignments. Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and once a stalwart of the PDP has grown increasingly close to the APC-led federal government.
Observers say the clash in Bayelsa could be a sign of deeper rifts within the southern political bloc as the 2027 general elections approach. For now, all eyes remain on whether Wike will test the political waters in Bayelsa—and if the drums will indeed roll.
