As political tension continues to simmer in Rivers State, Jake Epelle, a political affairs commentator and governance advocate, has raised serious concerns over the reported secret peace arrangement between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking during a recent interview with Channels Television, Epelle shared his views on the rumored agreement and its potential consequences for political stability in the state.

The development comes amid an ongoing power struggle within the state’s political hierarchy, where alliances and loyalty appear to be shifting rapidly.

According to widespread speculation, part of the peace accord allegedly brokered between Wike and Fubara includes a controversial clause barring the governor from seeking re-election in 2027.

Additionally, it is being claimed that control over all 23 local government chairmanship positions in Rivers State has been ceded to Wike’s political influence.

Although the details of the agreement have not been officially disclosed or independently verified, Epelle did not hesitate to express skepticism and concern.

He described the rumored deal as both “unclear and unfair,” suggesting it could undermine the democratic structure of governance in the state.

Mocking the feasibility of such an arrangement, Epelle stated, “I don’t know whether he’s going to divide himself into 23 and contest all the local government positions.” With this remark, he questioned how one individual could reasonably dominate all local councils unless those seats were being filled by loyalists who would act according to his directives.

This, he implied, could lead to the concentration of power in the hands of a single political figure—one no longer holding an elective position in the state.

Epelle further warned that if Governor Fubara accepts these alleged conditions, it would not only diminish his political capital but also render his leadership ineffective. “He will be a lame duck governor,” he said, referring to the political term used to describe an officeholder who lacks the influence or authority to govern effectively.

In such a scenario, Fubara would remain governor in title but would be surrounded by individuals whose allegiance lies elsewhere, effectively sidelining him in the affairs of state.

For now, the specifics of the alleged agreement remain shrouded in secrecy, but the implications—if true—could redefine the political future of Rivers State and possibly affect broader political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
