Dele Momodu, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of deliberately orchestrating chaos within opposition parties to weaken them and steer Nigeria toward becoming a one-party state.
Momodu did not shy away from highlighting internal issues within the PDP, which he referred to as the party’s “own worst enemy.” He attributed much of the PDP’s ongoing crisis to unresolved conflicts stemming from the 2022 primary elections and accused the APC of taking advantage of these internal divisions to further weaken the party.
He expressed concern about the deteriorating state of the PDP, pointing out that some members who lost during the 2022 primaries are still nursing grievances and have yet to fully recover from their defeat. According to Momodu, this unresolved bitterness has left the party vulnerable to external interference.
On the external front, Momodu accused the APC of employing deliberate strategies to sow discord within opposition parties. He claimed the ruling party is particularly focused on destabilizing prominent opposition groups such as the PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP to weaken their collective strength.
“Nigeria is clearly heading in the direction of a one-party state,” Momodu stated. “The APC is so fearful of opposition that it is actively engineering crises across major opposition parties. It’s evident that this is a coordinated effort to destroy any meaningful resistance.”
Momodu further expressed unease about the uncertain future of Nigeria’s political landscape, noting, “Everyone can see what’s happening, but how this situation will unfold is beyond prediction. For now, all we can do is observe and hope for a resolution.”
Reflecting on the root causes of the PDP’s challenges, Momodu traced the party’s internal discord to the fallout of its 2022 presidential primaries. He pointed to the defeat of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike by Atiku Abubakar and the subsequent failure to select Wike as Atiku’s running mate as a major turning point in the party’s troubles.
“The crisis began when former Governor Wike lost the presidential primary to Atiku Abubakar and was overlooked for the vice-presidential slot,” Momodu said. “Since then, Wike’s alignment has shifted. While he may not have physically left the PDP, it’s clear that his political loyalty now lies with the APC.”
He added: “However, he is yet to find the courage to physically join APC because he knows he would not be able to wield the kind of power he wielded in PDP. Right now, where his friends are holding sway, he is empowering them and encouraging them to keep PDP under the water.”
