The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has explained his side of the recent clash between him and some officers of the Nigerian Navy over a disputed piece of land in Abuja. The land, which was linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff, became a point of tension when Wike visited the site and questioned the documents being used to claim ownership.
In a video shared by Channels Television from 37.56, Wike said he has no issues with the military and respects the sacrifices they make for the country. However, he believes that as a representative of the President, he also deserves respect when carrying out his duties. According to him, he personally asked the officer in charge to show the documents approving the use of the land, but none were provided.
He stressed that what happened was not a fight against the military but an effort to stop lawlessness. Wike said he cannot allow rules to apply to ordinary people while powerful or former officials get exempted. For him, enforcing order must be the same for everyone, no matter their past positions.
He also responded to claims that he insulted the naval officer, Lieutenant Yerima. Many people said he called the officer a fool, but Wike explained that what he meant was that no officer should carry out an illegal instruction. He insisted that he would never insult the military, given their crucial role in combating insecurity and protecting the nation.
In his words, “Some people said I said the boy (Yerima), you’re a fool. What I meant was this, you can’t be carrying out an illegal order. That’s what I meant.” View, More,
