Apostle Johnson Suleman, founder of Omega Fire Ministries International, shared a significant policy shift in his ministry—ending the use of envelopes for tithes at a recent Recovery Conference.
The decision, he revealed, was born out of a peculiar experience with a former church member whose rebellious spirit led to unforeseen consequences.
According to Apostle Suleman, the church once used envelopes to collect tithes, with each contribution documented for administrative and accountability purposes. However, an incident involving a man who requested a full refund of his tithes forced the leadership to rethink the approach.
“He brought records,” Suleman recalled. “He had documented every tithe he gave. We were not even aware. He insisted we refund him everything because he was leaving the church.”
The man’s request followed a confrontation with the church’s ordained ministers. He had claimed to hear a voice telling him to send away his wife and marry another woman. When the ministers rejected the claim, declaring it unbiblical, the man got offended. “I told him, yes, you heard a voice, but it was the voice of the devil,” Suleman stated.
Despite legal advice to contest the refund, Suleman instructed the church to return every kobo. “Give him everything,” he insisted. The refund was captured on video for records. This experience, the Apostle explained, highlighted the dangers of keeping detailed tithe records attached to individuals.
“We give to God, not man,” he emphasized. “That was when we banned envelopes and stopped keeping individual records.”
Suleman linked the man’s behavior to rebellion—a trait he warned is akin to witchcraft. “There are people who are naturally rebellious. They attack every structure and process. Nobody can pastor them,” he said. The episode remains a cautionary tale about submission, spiritual covering, and the dangers of unrestrained independence within the Church.
