Prominent Nigerian human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has called on the Nigerian government and the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States.
Falana made the appeal in a recent statement reported by Vanguard, where he suggested that diplomatic pressure from key global powers such as China and Russia may be crucial in persuading Iran to move toward a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
The senior lawyer expressed concern over the continued tensions and the human cost of the conflict, noting that several lives have already been lost.
He said the situation has drawn serious concern from members of the international community, many of whom have called for an immediate end to hostilities.
According to Falana, the United States military has so far resisted a number of international appeals urging a halt to the confrontation.
This stance, he noted, has heightened fears that the conflict could continue for a prolonged period if stronger diplomatic intervention is not pursued.
In his remarks, Falana proposed that Nigeria should work with other nations to encourage China or Russia to intervene diplomatically. He argued that both countries maintain strong political and strategic relationships with Iran, which could make them more effective mediators in the current crisis.
Falana explained that Iran has historically maintained close ties with both Beijing and Moscow, making the two nations influential voices in matters involving Tehran. Because of this relationship, he believes Iran may be more willing to listen to proposals or mediation efforts coming from those countries.
He stressed that Nigeria should not remain passive while the conflict continues to escalate, particularly given the broader implications the crisis could have for international peace and stability.
Falana added that global cooperation would be essential to preventing the conflict from expanding further. He warned that a prolonged war could worsen humanitarian conditions, increase geopolitical tensions, and disrupt international economic and security systems.
The legal practitioner therefore urged Nigerian authorities to actively participate in diplomatic initiatives designed to promote dialogue and negotiations among the parties involved.
According to him, persuading China and Russia to step in could create an opportunity for meaningful engagement that may eventually lead to a ceasefire or negotiated settlement. Read_More…
