Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently shared his disappointment with Peter Obi during an interview on Arise Television. Speaking ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Showunmi explained why he is no longer excited about Obi’s political direction.

He said he once believed in Peter Obi’s vision and supported him during the 2023 election. According to Showunmi, he had hoped that Obi would work with others to challenge the current political system in a united and strategic way. Instead, he feels Obi is trying to do everything on his own, without building strong alliances.

Showunmi said that even if they didn’t win, a strong, united campaign could have made a big difference by inspiring hope and breaking long-standing political barriers—especially for the South East region of Nigeria. He felt this effort could have united the country and made Obi a stronger symbol for the Igbo people in national politics.

However, Showunmi is now frustrated. He believes that Obi hasn’t made up his mind about 2027 and is wasting time. He even warned Obi months earlier that if he didn’t take clear action by May 29, he would consider supporting President Bola Tinubu instead.

Showunmi believes Peter Obi is missing a big opportunity to build something lasting. He doesn’t think Obi’s current approach—meeting with the same old politicians and calling it change—is the right path forward. He says Obi has a choice to make, but time is running out.
