According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Friday, August 22, 2025, Oseloka Obi, the son of the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded for the first time to viral allegations linking him to homosexuality.
His reaction comes days after photos of him with a British-Nigerian friend circulated widely online, sparking gossip and heated speculation across social media.
The controversy began earlier in the week when pictures emerged showing Oseloka seated closely with London-based Kent Okwesa at a restaurant in the United Kingdom.
The images, which appeared online on Wednesday, quickly went viral, with many people attaching different interpretations to them.
This prompted a wave of rumours aimed at questioning his personal life and, by extension, casting aspersions on his family.
In a firm statement, Oseloka dismissed the allegations as unfounded and malicious. He attributed the rumours to the heightened attention surrounding his father’s political career, explaining that his family has become an easy target for political attacks.
“Due to my father’s involvement in Nigerian politics, there has been ongoing curiosity and, at times, a harmful obsession with me,” he stated.
Oseloka admitted that he rarely addresses such issues, preferring to stay away from the noise of social media. However, he said the persistence of the rumours made it necessary to break his silence.
He described the viral photos as ordinary and harmless images taken with friends and colleagues, insisting that there was no hidden meaning behind them.
He further clarified that he does not maintain an active presence on social media, which makes it easy for misinformation about him to spread unchecked.
“I don’t have a presence on social media and have no desire to create one, so I seldom correct these inaccuracies. However, maybe it’s time I address them,” he remarked.
Strongly rejecting the allegations, Oseloka said the attempt to twist casual photographs into scandalous material was a deliberate act of misinformation.
He noted that such narratives are being peddled not because of who he is, but because of his father’s influence and relevance in Nigerian politics.
“The truth is simple: Peter Obi’s son appears in photos with his friends and colleagues, nothing more. If people wish to invent otherwise, I hope they sleep soundly knowing they are spreading lies,” he asserted.
Beyond denying the rumours, Oseloka reflected on the difficulties of being the child of a prominent political figure.
He acknowledged that the Obi family has long been a target of political opponents seeking to discredit his father, especially since the 2023 presidential elections where Peter Obi played a central role as the Labour Party’s candidate.
Despite the controversies, Oseloka reaffirmed his admiration for his father’s values and leadership qualities.
He said that while his father is not perfect, his commitment to Nigeria’s progress is unwavering and remains the reason why he supports him wholeheartedly.
“My father has my vote, not because he is my father, but because he is the right man for the job,” he declared.
He stressed that no amount of falsehood or scandal could derail their focus on the bigger picture.
According to him, attempts to tarnish his image or create scandals around him are nothing but distractions meant to weaken his father’s credibility. However, he vowed that they would not be deterred by such tactics.
Oseloka maintained that his family would not engage in mudslinging or personal attacks, no matter how intense the smear campaigns become. Instead, he said they would continue to stay focused on the vision of a better Nigeria.
“If others wish to go low, invent scandals, or attack me to wound him, they are free to do so. But we will go high, and we will continue to focus on the future of Nigeria,” he affirmed.
