Senator Ireti Kingibe has made it clear that she would not support her former husband, Baba Gana Kingibe, if he chose to run for president in the present political climate. She believes that while he once had the qualities of a capable leader, his time to contest for such a high office has passed.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television from 46:13, the senator acknowledged that she previously viewed her former husband as someone who could have made a great president. However, she emphasized that leadership, particularly at the national level, must reflect the energy and capacity required to manage the country’s demands.
According to Kingibe, Nigeria is in need of a new generation of leadership. She argued that the next president should be reasonably young and vibrant, someone physically and mentally equipped to take on the challenges of governing a nation as complex as Nigeria.
She suggested that while age alone should not disqualify someone from holding office, the country should begin transitioning power to younger individuals who can bring fresh ideas and sustained energy to the presidency. This, she noted, is crucial for long-term national progress.
Kingibe also stressed the importance of recognizing when one’s time in leadership has passed. She stated that it is vital for older leaders to step aside and allow successors to take charge, especially in a country where generational renewal in governance is long overdue.
In her remarks: “Even if you are starting off with a president who is not 40 years old but he should be, I think going forward, reasonably young. I have always felt that my former husband Baba Kingibe would have made an excellent president. But if he were to wake up today and say, ‘I am running for president’, I wouldn’t support him. Why? Everything has its time and when your time passes you give it to your successors, younger people”.
