According to Report From VANGUARD, Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed uncertainty about his potential candidacy for the presidency in 2027, citing the need for a “viable platform” as a key consideration. Atiku made this statement during an interview on the television program Untold Stories, hosted by Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie, which is scheduled to air today.
Atiku, who previously led a coalition of opposition figures to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming election, clarified that although discussions about leadership in the alliance have been ongoing, he has yet to make a final decision about his own candidacy. He emphasized that more than ever before, Nigeria requires “experienced and credible leadership,” but stressed that the country’s current political landscape must first present a sustainable platform for any serious contender.
In his interview, Atiku drew parallels to the political situation in 2014 when various opposition leaders merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC), with one candidate emerging to unify the party and win the election. He noted the importance of unity and a strong platform in the political process.
Atiku also weighed in on the state of Nigeria’s democracy, agreeing with former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s concerns that it is weakening. He described the situation as “very dire,” highlighting the troubling trend among younger politicians who have held leadership positions but have not demonstrated significant improvements in governance.
The former PDP presidential candidate, who has contested the presidency a record six times, also expressed his disappointment with the leadership of the next generation, particularly among former governors and senators. Despite his concerns, Atiku emphasized the urgent need for strong and effective governance in Nigeria.
