The suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and his loyalists were absent during the local government elections held across the state, as reported by Daily Post on Sunday, 31 August, 2025.
Fubara, who is expected to return to office on September 18, was not in the state during the polls.
His close allies also stayed away, among them were his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, and the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo.
Other key supporters also avoided their polling units on election day.
The 23 former local government chairmen, who were earlier sacked by the Supreme Court, also refused to take part.
Their absence cleared the way for candidates loyal to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former governor of the state.
A loyalist of the governor, who did not want his name published, said there was no need to participate.
He argued that the winners were already known even before voting began.
According to him, there was no point wasting time on an exercise where the outcome had been predetermined.
He also revealed that Governor Fubara is currently outside the country.
The governor is expected to return early next month, just before the end of his suspension.
The source explained that most of the developments were part of a peace agreement between Wike and Fubara.
The deal was reportedly reached in the presence of President Bola Tinubu.
He said the arrangement shifted power away from Fubara and returned it to Wike’s camp.
The loyalist added that the governor accepted the situation for the sake of peace.
He said Fubara believed that even his seat could be sacrificed if it would prevent further crisis in the state.
“We knew the winners before the election started. So why do we need to waste our precious time to go and vote? Vote for who?
Most of the things happening today are parts of the agreement Wike and Fubara signed in the presence of Mr President. They have taken the power from the governor,” he said.
