Segun Showunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has spoken strongly about Peter Obi’s political style and the behaviour of his supporters, known as the Obidients. In an interview with Nigeria Info FM, he argued that Obi’s political movement has created more problems than solutions and warned that it could harm his long-term ambitions.

Showunmi explained that although Obi may have doubts about the PDP due to issues such as alleged vote buying, his actions outside the party have not convinced many people of his political strength. He pointed out that Obi had once been given political structures in Anambra State through the PDP, but the results of those opportunities were disappointing.

He criticised Obi’s approach to politics, describing it as being too focused on individual control rather than collaboration. In a democratic system, he stressed, success comes from teamwork, negotiation, and building alliances with other leaders. Acting alone, he argued, only limits political progress.

Showunmi also noted that the southeast, where Obi draws most of his support, has governors who are politically strong and not easy to bypass.

His strongest criticism was directed at the Obidients. He said their constant attacks on political leaders reduce Obi’s credibility and legitimacy, especially since Obi has not shown the courage to correct or distance himself from such behaviour.

“He has not shown the courage to be able to stop them or tell them I don’t agree with this. Who is going to allow his Obidents to be insulting everybody’s leader? Who is going to agree to that?” he said.

Showunmi also suggested that if Obi wants to remain influential in national politics, he must change his strategy and consider returning fully to the PDP.
