Public Communications Expert and Executive Director of Development Specs Academy, in the recent video from 11:00, Professor Okey Ikechukwu, weighed in on the ongoing discussions surrounding the idea of a Biafra state in southeastern Nigeria.
“Who will lead if we talk about the concept of a Biafra state?” Ikechukwu asked, highlighting the leadership vacuum that could complicate any attempt at secession.
The professor noted that while discussions around autonomy and self-determination are prevalent in the region, there is no clear leadership structure to guide such movements effectively.
Ikechukwu emphasized that this uncertainty could undermine the credibility and feasibility of the Biafra concept among both residents and the broader Nigerian populace.
He further pointed out that political elites in the Southeast are largely beneficiaries of the current federal system and are unlikely to support any initiative that threatens their interests.
“A referendum in the Southeast may not receive federal funding or support,” Ikechukwu stated, stressing the practical and legal challenges associated with attempting such a plebiscite.
He explained that without federal backing, a referendum would face serious logistical, financial, and political obstacles that could limit its legitimacy.
Ikechukwu also highlighted the potential risks of proceeding without clear structures, noting that uncoordinated actions could exacerbate tensions in the region.
The professor suggested that meaningful dialogue and structured planning among political, academic, and business leaders would be necessary before any discussion of autonomy could progress responsibly.
