According to a report by The Vanguard on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu has been named the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the expiration of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure.

Yakubu, who led the commission since 2015, announced the decision on Tuesday, citing Section 306 of the 1999 Constitution to ensure a seamless transition for the upcoming electoral season. Agbamuche-Mbu, the most senior National Commissioner, was appointed by consensus.

The new Acting Chairman is a highly experienced legal practitioner with over three decades in the public and private sectors. She holds roots in Delta State but was raised in Kano. Agbamuche-Mbu is an alumna of Obafemi Awolowo University, graduating with an LLB in 1984.

She has remarkable international credentials, having been called to the Bar in both Nigeria (1985) and the United Kingdom, where she qualified as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales.

Her academic excellence includes an LLM in Commercial and Corporate Law from Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, and two other postgraduate degrees focusing on International Dispute Resolution and International Business Law.

This background positions her as an expert in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), having served as Secretary for the Nigeria Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK).

Agbamuche-Mbu has a history of national service, including being the sole solicitor on the Presidential Projects Assessment Committee (PPAC) from 2010 to 2011.
