Mariam Sani Abacha, the wife of late Nigerian military ruler General Sani Abacha, recently spoke out in an interview with TVC News. She defended her husband against long-standing accusations that he stole billions of dollars during his time as Head of State in the 1990s.
In her interview, she questioned the logic behind the claims. “Where did he steal the money from? Where would he have stolen the money from if he kept the money?” she asked, suggesting that if her husband truly took the money, it would have been obvious where it came from and where it was kept.
Mrs. Abacha also expressed her frustration with the way Nigerians react to these stories. She said, “Because Nigerians are fools, they listen to everything,” showing how upset she was about the repeated accusations and the public’s willingness to believe them without question.
She went on to say that no one person is greater than Nigeria. “Even the single man on the streets is very important,” she stated. She also called for unity and peace, adding that the constant blame and political fights should end.
“Babangida cannot make or unmake Nigeria,” she said, referring to another former military ruler. “All these problems should stop.”
