In a recent statement via his official X account, Professor Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, a well-known human rights lawyer, and former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission, has reacted to the inability of authorities to find the former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had declared Bello wanted in April, after been accused of laundering of N84 billion.
He was expected to appear before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja for his arraignment, however, Bello has not been seen.
Odinkalu expressed his concerns and frustration over the situation.
“Where Is Yahaya Bello. Where Is Yahaya Bello. Pls help us ask @officialEFCC & @PoliceNG & @OfficialDSSNG. So the man has just vanished?!” Odinkalu wrote.
The EFCC declared Bello wanted in connection with money laundering charges.
Despite their efforts, authorities have not been able to locate him.
The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Police are also involved in the search.
The situation has raised questions about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies.
Critics are concerned about the clear inability to track down a high-profile figure like Bello.
Justice Emeka Nwite was scheduled to preside over Bello’s arraignment.
The court session has always been postponed due to Bello’s absence. There is no clear indication of when he will be found and brought to court.
