According to a recent video from 0:46 by Edmond Obilo, Human rights activist and former journalist Abdul Oroh has recounted the extraordinary efforts he made to cover the release of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti from prison.

Oroh revealed that upon receiving information that Fela would be released from a prison in Benin, he immediately mobilized photographers and members of the Shrine to capture the historic moment.

According to him, they arrived at the prison on Sapele Road and spent the entire night outside, waiting. “We slept there,” he said, noting that Fela was eventually released in the early hours of the morning and immediately transported to Lagos around 4:00 a.m.

Oroh explained that after confirming the release later that morning, he was instructed by his editors to return to Lagos urgently. In a dramatic rush, he headed to the airport and ensured the story was filed promptly. He described the experience as one of the defining moments of his journalism career, underscoring the significance of Fela’s influence and public interest at the time.
