Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chino Obiagwu, has stated that if impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara begin, the Chief Judge of Rivers State will be in charge of overseeing the investigation.

He made this statement during an interview from 32:12 with TVC News while addressing the Rivers State House of Assembly’s decision to launch an investigation into Chief Judge Justice Simeon Amadi over alleged age falsification.

Obiagwu emphasized that the Assembly, under the leadership of Martin Amaewhule, does not have the authority to interfere in the tenure of the Chief Judge.

He explained that the Assembly’s actions are aimed at setting the stage for the potential impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He emphasized that only the National Judicial Council has the power to remove the Chief Judge, not even the governor.

He warned that the ongoing political conflict is escalating, with various stakeholders, including civil society groups, traditional rulers, and religious leaders, taking sides instead of working towards reconciliation. He stressed the need for all parties to resolve their differences and restore peace.

He said, “The House of Assembly has no power to interfere with the tenure of the Chief Judge, it is the National Judicial Council. Not even the governor can remove the chief Judge. When they start the impeachment process, it is the Chief Judge that will lead the process of investigation and tabling the report. So, they are preparing ground for that. I think it is important that all the parties must sheathe their swords and broker for peace, and I don’t think that has happened. Even the Civil Societies, the traditional rulers, the religious leaders, everybody appears to have taken sides, and that is really very bad.”
