As Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State prepares to return to the Government House in Port Harcourt on September 18, reports indicate that his support has weakened, with some associates suggesting he may come back as a “lame duck” with little influence.

According to The Punch, Fubara had been suspended on March 18, 2025, after President Bola Tinubu declared emergency rule in the state following political unrest and an alleged militant attack on oil facilities. Since then, little has been heard about him.

Following his reconciliation with his political mentor, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the support groups that once backed both men — the ‘Simplified Family’ for Fubara and the ‘Wikematics’ for Wike — have dissolved.

There were also rumours that the State Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), was seeking to extend emergency rule, but his media aide, Hector Igbikiowubo, dismissed the claim.

A prominent Peoples Democratic Party’s member and a politician in the state, who asked not to be mentioned, said that it would be better for Fubara to resign than return to face humiliation.

He said, “What the governor can do now is, when he is recalled, he should resume. But the following day, to save his face, he should address Rivers people and then resign from office.”
