As reported by the Daily Post on Sunday, July 20, 2025, Mrs. Vivian Ezeonwumelu, a widow, recounted to BIODUN BUSARI how her brother-in-law allegedly forced her out of her late husband’s ancestral home in Awka, Anambra State, due to a disagreement over property.

I work both as a small-scale vendor and cultivate crops for income. I specialize in selling fish and palm oil. I originate from Enugu State but currently reside in Enugwu Adazi, located in Anaocha LGA of Anambra. In addition to trading, I till the land and harvest produce to make ends meet. Since my husband passed away, life has been unbearably difficult for me and our two children. His death on December 17, 2023, brought immense hardship that I am still grappling with.

When asked why her late husband was given the land by his father, she responded:

Honestly, I have no clear answer. The property was handed to him before we got married, and I suspect it was because he was the youngest in the family. The man now contesting ownership with me is his older brother, the family’s first son.

The land in question is not extensive—just two plots. It sits directly behind their father’s main house in our village, here in Anambra.

When my husband died, no one offered any financial or emotional help. We managed to bury him eight months later. The wake took place on August 15, 2024, followed by the burial ceremony on the 16th.

“There was none that I know of. We lived together as one big family, not until his death that he started being hostile towards me. Even my children and I have never had any quarrel with him. When my husband was alive, my brother-in-law would praise me in his presence that I was a good wife.”

I never imagined he would turn against me like this. The pain and shock of his actions weigh heavily on me. I’m constantly stressed and emotionally exhausted. It’s heartbreaking to remember that this man once described me as a rare blessing to the family—a woman of grace and humility—yet now I face humiliation and rejection at his hands.
