Chief Jack Adokiye, a retired army corporal who was among the soldiers that carried out the failed 1990 coup, has stated that he was deceived and forced into joining the coup plotters. He explained that at the time he was only a corporal and had no idea what he was being drawn into.
In an interview with Agbaletu TV from 19:29, Adokiye said he was misled by Captain Emperor who invited him to a party at the home of Major Saliba Mukoro.
Adokiye said Captain Emperor took him, along with other soldiers, to the home of Major Mukoro where he met several soldiers and officers drinking. He said shortly after, Major Mukoro announced to everyone that the purpose of their gathering there was to carryout a coup against the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida
Adokiye said Mukoro then instructed Captain Emperor and Captain Tolofari to ensure that no soldier left the premises. He said soon after, vehicles were brought into the compound to convey them to the various barracks they were supposed to attack.
In Adokiye’s words: “That was when Major Mukoro announced to everybody that, ‘Gentlemen, do you all know why we gathered here tonight? It is to flush out the present military government from seat’. That was when it occured to me that all those signs that I experienced God didn’t want me to follow them but I didn’t understand the signs. So from there, he said ‘Captain Emperor and Captain Tolofari make sure nobody escapes’. The next thing brand new J-5 and station wagon came into his premises”
