Senator Ali Ndume has decried the poor remuneration and welfare of Nigerian soldiers, particularly at the entry level. He alleged that a private soldier, even after graduation, has been earning as low as 50,000 naira monthly — a figure he described as unacceptable, especially given the sacrifices they make.
Ndume revealed that during his time as Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Army, he and others pushed for improvements in soldiers’ daily rations, which were supposed to be increased to 5,000 naira by the Buhari administration. However, soldiers continue to receive only 1,500 naira. He further alleged that despite the Nigerian Army’s efforts to secure better funding, there has been little to no progress, and payments are often delayed.
He said in an interview with Channels TV from 31:28, “Can you imagine a private soldier after graduation is been paid 50,000 naira? Until recently with the increase in minimum wage, and I’m not even sure whether it has been implemented. The daily ration when I was chairman, Nigerian Army, we pushed President Buhari reviewed it to 5,000 naira, but they are paid 1,500 naira. The Nigerian Army did everything to have this money increased – nothing! And worst of it, you understand, these people don’t get their money as and when due.”
