Veteran journalist and political aide, Chuks Iloegbunam has shared his personal encounter with former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon during his tenure as Chief of Staff to former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.

Speaking on the Edmund Obilo Show on Splash FM 105.5 from 2:24, Iloegbunam recalled how he personally handled the arrangements for Gowon’s visit to the state. He explained that the former leader, who has long been known for his advocacy campaign tagged “Nigeria Prays”, was in Anambra at the time for one of his national prayer sessions.

“When I was Chief of Staff to Governor Peter Obi, Gowon visited. He was moving around with his Nigeria Prays. I was the person who received him. I was the person who put him in a hotel where he stayed,” Iloegbunam recounted.

He said the visit underscored the respect the Obi administration accorded to elder statesmen, regardless of political differences or historical controversies surrounding their leadership. Iloegbunam added that it was his duty to ensure that Gowon’s stay in Anambra was well-coordinated and comfortable, noting that the gesture reflected Governor Obi’s commitment to hospitality and inclusiveness.

General Gowon, who led Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, has in recent decades championed national prayer movements and peace advocacy across the country, often touring states to promote unity and spiritual renewal. Iloegbunam’s account adds a behind-the-scenes perspective to those visits, highlighting the role of state officials in facilitating them.
