Nigerian politician and lawyer Kenneth Okonkwo recently shared a personal story about his trip to Hong Kong, highlighting how Nigeria is viewed abroad. He explained what happened when he was about to leave the country.
In a video posted by SYMFONI TV, Kenneth said after finishing his business in Hong Kong, he went to the airport to return home. There, airport officials pulled him aside. They told him that most people who looked like him usually extended their stay, and they were surprised he was leaving early.
According to Kenneth, he told them he had completed his work and was ready to go. He said the officials then asked if he didn’t like their country. Kenneth replied that Hong Kong was a great place, but he preferred his own country.
When they asked which country he was from, he proudly said Nigeria. According to Kenneth, the officials gave him a sarcastic smile, showing they didn’t take his answer seriously. He said he could tell they didn’t believe Nigeria could be better.
Kenneth used the moment to reflect on Nigeria’s image. He said bad leadership doesn’t last forever, but the damage it causes can affect the country for a long time.
His words,
“They said does it mean you don’t like our country? I said your country is fantastic. I like it but my own country is better. So they(Officials) were forced to ask me which country. I’m sure they were expecting to mention… I said Nigeria. I saw how all of them gave me one kind sarcastic smile. So even me knew that they didn’t believe me but it’s not my business.
