Former lawmaker and political commentator, Hon. Henry Shield, has questioned the silence of opposition leaders in Nigeria, insisting that their reluctance to confront the Tinubu administration is a matter of fear rather than strategy.
Speaking in a recent interview with Mic On Podcast, Shield argued that while former presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari operated with “some little sense of decorum and decency,” the present political environment is much tougher, leaving opposition figures hesitant to take risks.
“Tinubu is not Jonathan. He is not Buhari. Those men had some little sense of decorum and decency in them. This one is brutal. That is why when I look at El-Rufai, when I look at Peter Obi, when I look at Atiku, I ask them a question: why are you people scared of confronting this government? What are you scared of? Prison?” Shield asked.
According to him, the refusal of prominent opposition leaders like Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar to openly challenge the administration raises doubts about their political courage. Shield stressed that Nigerians expect the opposition to provide checks and balances, not retreat in fear of political consequences.
He maintained that the essence of democracy is strong opposition, and if those who claim to represent alternatives remain quiet, then citizens will be left without a voice.
