The head of the Simplicity Movement in Rivers State, Sobomabo Jackrich, has accused Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike of attempting to exert excessive control over Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his successor.
During a discussion with Channels TV, Jackrich reflected on the political maneuvers that led to the current tensions. He stated, “When I contested against the current governor, the former governor and now FCT Minister used all his influence to ensure Fubara was installed. Now, he is unexpectedly turning against him without any valid justification.”
The former Niger Delta militant suggested that Wike’s actions are driven by a desire to maintain authority. He remarked, “It seems he just wants to continue ruling the state from behind the scenes. But things don’t function that way. Regardless of whether Fubara was once under his mentorship, he is now the elected leader of Rivers State and should be allowed the freedom to carry out his responsibilities.”
Jackrich further accused Wike of excessive interference, saying, “He constantly tries to dictate Fubara’s decisions, determining what he should approve or reject. This approach reduces the governor to a mere figurehead.”
On the other hand, Wike has consistently denied these claims. The FCT Minister argues that Governor Fubara attempted to dismantle his political network in Rivers State soon after assuming office. He defends his stance by asserting that every political leader aims to remain significant, and losing control of his political structure in Rivers would severely impact his career and influence in the state’s affairs.
Hear him speak: “I remember when I contested against the present governor of the state, the former Governor and the President Minister of FCT compelled and did all within his powers to plant the governor. And then he is now making a U-turn to oppose him for no just reason.
