According to a report by Punch on Sunday, November 9, 2025, US Senator Ted Cruz has called for stronger action to stop the killing of Christians in Nigeria.

He said many Nigerian politicians who deny the mass killings are afraid of America’s political and economic influence.

Cruz, who represents Texas, spoke in a viral audio clip over the weekend.

He discussed a proposed bill that would push the US State Department to take a firmer stance on religious persecution in Nigeria.

The legislation, according to Cruz, would officially designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern.”

It would also allow the US to impose sanctions on Nigerian officials found responsible for the atrocities against Christians.

He added that the bill would also punish individuals who enable or cover up religious violence.

The senator explained that sanctions could target local and state officials involved in the attacks.

He said this step has not yet been implemented, but he hopes the Trump administration will act soon.

Cruz stressed that the US has enormous leverage over Nigeria.

He said America can use both diplomatic and economic pressure to force positive changes.

He noted that his campaign to highlight the killings has unsettled politicians across Nigeria. Many have tried to downplay or deny the violence.

“There’s a reason that when I began calling out Nigeria for this mass murder of Christians, you had Nigerian politicians across the spectrum trying to argue against it because they are very, very afraid of the United States using our leverage to force them to change,” Cruz said. View, More,
