Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has alleged that economic conditions have deteriorated so sharply under the current administration that private university fees have surged far beyond what they were during Buhari’s government. He stated that when Buhari was in office, school fees at Baze University were one million naira, contrasting this with current rates which he implied are significantly higher.

He further stated that rising fuel costs and operational expenses are now being passed on to parents and students rather than absorbed by institutions. He argued that while school owners justify the increases by citing inflation and running costs, the burden ultimately falls on families, putting education further out of reach for many Nigerians.

He said in an interview with Channels TV from 19:58, “When Buhari was in government, school fees in Baze University were one million naira. Is it one million now? The owner of the school simply tells you, ‘I had to increase the school fees because the cost of fuel is high. I run this, and this is how much I spend to run this.’ If I go in the so-called ban, this is how much I pay. So who bears the cost? Not him. The children that are being trained. If you don’t pay the school fees, those children won’t be trained.”
