According to a report by The Punch on July 18, 2025, Hadiza Muhammadu Buhari, popularly known as Nana and one of the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s older daughters, shared a childhood experience that revealed her father’s unshakable sense of discipline and moral values.
Nana recalled how, during their school days, her father gave her and her siblings money to buy textbooks. After making the purchases, she used part of the remaining change to buy sweets. On returning home, she handed over the leftover money and informed him of the sweets. Buhari didn’t get angry, but he corrected her gently. He emphasized that when sent on an errand, the right thing to do is return the change and only keep it if the sender allows it. “Do not touch anything that is not yours,” he told her. “Keep the trust and do not take away someone else’s rights.”
In her words, “I remember once he gave us money to buy some textbooks. After I bought some, I had some change, so I bought some sweets. After I returned and told him and gave him the rest of the change, he told me, Nana, that’s not good. If you are sent to buy something with money, when you return, give the change back to the person who sent it, and if he takes it and gives it to you, you can accept it. Do not touch anything that is not yours. Keep the trust and do not take away someone else’s rights.”
She also recalled another tender moment during her father’s medical treatment in London. Nana had flown in to visit him during Salah. After spending some time with him, she informed him that she was returning to Nigeria, and he told hherto greet Nigerians for him. For her, it was a small but telling reminder of how deeply he valued the people he once led.
Nana described her father as modest and principled, noting how he never allowed the privileges of office to influence his parenting. Even as a president, he maintained the same expectations of honesty, integrity, and accountability within the family.
Reflecting on his personal life, she added that he was not a man driven by wealth or luxury. His routines were simple, and his expectations, even simpler—rooted in fairness, modesty, and discipline. She said that for many years, he always encouraged his children to live simply, stay grounded, and be honest in all dealings.
