Nigeria’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, criticized former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to bypass the United Nations in brokering the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
In an interview with Arise News from 14:45, Akinyemi argued that Trump’s approach created a poorly conceived peace plan that failed to consider key transition details necessary for lasting stability.
Reacting to Trump’s announcement that the long conflict in Gaza had ended, Akinyemi said the new peace deal lacks the depth and experience that typically guide United Nations-led operations.
He explained that while the UN’s process might be slow, its methods are deliberate and aimed at avoiding loopholes that could threaten peace efforts. Akinyemi warned that by excluding the UN, Trump designed a framework that ignored crucial security arrangements for the areas vacated by Israeli troops.
Akinyemi pointed out that Hamas was forced to redeploy its fighters to maintain order in the newly vacated zones, a move that has alarmed Israel and could reignite hostilities.
He cautioned that the absence of a properly structured peacekeeping transition might give the impression that multinational efforts are ineffective, when in fact the problem lies in poor planning. He advised that involving the United Nations immediately would help stabilize the situation and ensure the credibility and success of the peace program.
As he said, “I don’t believe in the Trumpian approach. You see, the United Nations has a long experience in setting up peacekeeping operations or peace enforcement operations and what Trump has done in bypassing the United Nations is coming up with a program that is not thought through.”
“Let me give you an example that we’ve just seen. All right, the Israeli troops have pulled out to the line where Trump has drawn. But the United States did not think of who would occupy during this transition period the line, the areas that are vacated by the Israelis.”
“And so what has happened is, in order to maintain peace, Hamas has had to bring back its troops, which frightens Israel. And I don’t really know what Netanyahu’s reaction is going to be.” See, More, Here>>>
