Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has provided more details on why he has been openly critical of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
In an interview on Channels Television, Adeyanju said his criticisms were not driven by political allegiance but by his conviction that Nigeria needs leaders who are transparent and accountable. He dismissed claims that he is indirectly supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) by constantly taking on Obi, explaining that his stance is rooted in principle.
Adeyanju revealed that he once had a private meeting with Obi where several issues were discussed, including allegations of corruption. According to him, he confronted the former Anambra State governor about reports suggesting the use of state resources for personal or family-related business interests while in office.
Adeyanju explained that he was stunned by Obi’s defense, which he believed amounted to justifying abuse of public trust.
“I also raised the issue about him using state resources in Anambra to invest in his family business. His explanation to me in his defense was that he had resigned from the company before he became a governor. I was flabbergasted. I couldn’t just wait to get up to leave the place,” Adeyanju said.
The activist added that, to him, Obi’s response reflected a worrying mindset about governance and accountability. He argued that leaders aspiring to the highest office in the country must be held to higher standards, especially regarding the use of public resources.
Adeyanju insisted that his role as an activist compels him to challenge anyone who seeks power without demonstrating a genuine commitment to democracy. He reiterated that Nigeria’s democratic system must be protected from individuals or groups who fail to understand the sacrifices required to build and preserve it.
