Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has recently shared his shocking ordeal with the public, detailing a series of disturbing events that took place when the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Idowu Owohunwa, allegedly interfered in his personal and professional matters. According to Obasa, the commissioner not only restricted him from entering his own home but also went as far as locking his wife inside and leaving his children stranded outside.
The incident reportedly took place early one morning when the House of Assembly members were having a private meeting. Without any prior notice or explanation, a large contingent of police officers, led by Commissioner Owohunwa, stormed the House, disrupting the proceedings.
In his words with the Agege people, he asked:
”What could have been his business in invading the house of assembly early that morning”?
Obasa was taken aback by the unannounced invasion, which he described as both unnecessary and alarming. To his surprise, the police force, numbering around 200 officers, was allegedly deployed to block his every move, effectively denying him his freedom and making it clear that his political position was under siege.
The former Speaker’s frustration grew as he revealed that the police detained members of the Agege constituency, whom he represented, in a bid to destabilize his efforts to fight for his rightful position. He found it outrageous that the police, under the leadership of Commissioner Owohunwa, would get involved in what he considered to be purely private matters between him and his colleagues in the assembly. Obasa was quick to emphasize that no one, not even the commissioner, had the right to strip him of his position as Speaker unless done through due process—a process he was determined to pursue to the very end.
The audacity of the police’s actions left Obasa questioning the motives behind the interference. His disbelief grew stronger with the realization that a matter so personal and political could be so openly manipulated, involving the police to intimidate and control his every move. In his view, the intrusion was not just an attack on his personal freedom but an effort to undermine the democratic process.
Obasa’s resolve to reclaim his position and expose the unlawful actions of the authorities highlights his unwavering commitment to standing up for his rights. He made it clear that he would not be intimidated, vowing to see the matter through the appropriate legal channels, ensuring that due process prevails. His message was clear: no one, no matter their position, could strip him of his hard-earned place in the assembly without facing the consequences of the law.
