Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has reacted strongly to a comment made by a Canadian judge who reportedly described Nigeria’s two main political parties as terrorist groups. Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Sani said the description was unfair, misleading, and insulting to Nigeria as a nation.
According to him, Nigeria is “too big a country” to be casually labeled in such a negative way. He explained that the remark may have come from a past dispute involving a former minister who once served under the Obasanjo administration, but insisted that it should not be used to paint the entire country or its political system.
Sani went further to remind the world of Nigeria’s peaceful history. He pointed out that Nigeria has never colonized, looted, or enslaved other nations, unlike some powerful countries.
“This is a nation that hasn’t colonized, we haven’t looted, we have not destroyed and enslaved other persons, and then you look at us, a nation of 250 million people, and say that,” he said.
To drive home his point, he recalled how the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima in Japan 80 years ago, killing over 250,000 people. “Yet nobody calls them terrorists,” he said.
The former senator argued that despite Nigeria’s many internal problems, the country does not deserve to be branded with such a damaging label. He emphasized that Nigerians have contributed to global peace efforts, and the world should recognize this instead of unfairly attacking the nation’s image.
Sani concluded that what Nigeria needs is for its citizens and leaders to always stand up and defend the dignity of their country.
