In an interview, Nigerian author Kanayo Esinulo discussed Nigeria’s conflicts during the Biafran War, highlighting how Chukuemeka Ojukwu, the Biafran leader, left Nigeria in 1970 and that Arab nations were involved in the struggle.
Esinulo pointed out that many people think Ojukwu escaped through Ulie Airport, but he argues that Ojukwu actually used Uga Airport, as Ulie was under attack from Russian fighter jets. This detail reveals the significant foreign involvement in Nigeria’s problems.
Additionally, Esinulo mentioned his friend Ojukwu, who linked the situation to Pan-Arabism, where Arab countries come together against common threats. Ojukwu’s choice to avoid Ulie Airport reflects his careful planning during a tumultuous time.
His words,
“Remember that we’re not fighting Nigeria alone; that’s what people don’t know. We’re fighting almost the entire Arab world. Emeka likes to call it Pan-Arabism. He knew that Ulie was under serious bombardment, so why should he leave through Ulie Airport, when we have other airports?”
