Even though the All Progressives Congress (APC) is welcoming new members, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, a prominent figure in the party and a former Deputy President of the Senate, has made it clear that the APC has taken a stand against two PDP members. Vanguard reports that former governor Ifeanyi Okowa and current governor Sheriff Oborevwori are not welcome to join the APC, as reported by Omo-Agege. He stressed that the two should not defect but instead stay in the PDP and work on restoring the party.
Omo-Agege reaffirmed the party’s progress in Delta State, noting its substantial wins in the 2023 elections, during a recent gathering with APC party leaders, elders, and stakeholders in the Ika South and Ika North East local government areas. He sees this as evidence of the increasing power of the APC in the state, since it includes the acquisition of two senatorial seats and two seats in the House of Representatives. Omo-Agege made it plain that Oborevwori and Okowa are not welcome in the APC, even though this is progress.
He emphasized that these two PDP officials should stay put and focus on building their party rather than trying to join the APC, even if the party is quickly growing in Delta and many prominent persons are interested in joining. In addition, the senator brought attention to the state of politics in Delta, pointing out that the APC has a stranglehold on the Delta Central Senatorial District, having won not one but two seats in the House of Representatives and five out of nine in the Assembly.
The rising popularity of the APC in the region was highlighted by the fact that the PDP failed to secure even one seat in the district. Several members of the Delta House of Representatives were contemplating leaving the PDP for the APC, and the state’s lone remaining PDP senator was intending to join the party, as Omo-Agege pointed out in response to assertions by the PDP that the APC had lost ground in the state following the 2023 elections.
His argument was that this proved the APC’s dominance in the state was growing while the PDP’s was shrinking. If there were any problems inside the APC in Delta, Omo-Agege promised that they would be addressed. He went on to say that the PDP’s national problem might make the party even less formidable, which would make the APC a more appealing choice for voters down the road.
The senator stated again that the APC will not tolerate anyone with a criminal past or other cause for suspicion to derail the party’s achievements. “We will not let individuals with dubious records to ruin what we have labored so diligently to build,” he declared.
