The Federal Government’s perceived neglect in celebrating three Nigerian schoolgirls from Yobe State who won first place at an international English competition in London has triggered strong reactions in the North. Many believe President Bola Tinubu’s response—limited to a congratulatory message—falls short of what such a historic achievement deserves.
According to a Daily Post report of August 11, 2025, the Yobe students’ victory was a source of pride for the region, often labeled as “educationally disadvantaged.” However, disappointment spread quickly when the government failed to announce any rewards, especially after recent high-profile gifts to Nigeria’s female sports teams, the Super Falcons and D’Tigress, which included national honors, $100,000 each, and new homes.
For many northerners, this difference in recognition has reinforced the belief that their region’s accomplishments are undervalued. Some argue it reflects a deeper pattern of marginalization, while others insist the government must treat all national achievements equally, regardless of origin.
Buhari Abubakar, speaking to Daily Post, criticized the President’s approach, saying it was yet another example of the North being overlooked despite contributing to national unity and development. His remarks mirror the growing frustration among citizens who feel that the achievements of northern youths are not celebrated in the same way as others.
“The President doesn’t take the north seriously, he neglects us and our needs. We will show him at the polls,” Abubakar said, signaling a warning ahead of future elections.
