Leke Abejide, a member of the House of Representatives and the highest-ranking elected official of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has issued a stern warning to political figures he accused of attempting to hijack the party for their own ambitions—singling out associates of Labour Party’s Peter Obi and the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting held on August 1, 2024, and shared via Symfoni TV from 6:29, Abejide decried what he described as a calculated infiltration of the ADC by “political mongers” from other parties. He alleged that these individuals—many of whom defected from PDP and Labour Party—are now positioning themselves as leaders within the ADC without proper party processes or democratic legitimacy.
In his words, “We will do everything legally possible to chase them out of the ADC.”
Abejide described the current crisis as a deliberate attempt to destroy the ADC’s internal structures in order to repurpose the party for a new coalition possibly tied to the 2027 elections. He claimed these actors came into the party “through the window” and now seek to dominate the very institution they once opposed or abandoned.
The Kogi-born legislator expressed concerns that the moves being made mirror past strategies used to undermine and collapse other political platforms. “They destroyed their own parties and now want to do the same to ours,” he said.
He also cast doubt on the legitimacy of the current ADC National Committee, alleging that there was no valid process to dissolve or elect new leadership. Abejide threatened to take the matter to court if necessary, insisting that the original leadership of the ADC remains intact.
Abejide’s outburst comes amid increasing rumors of a proposed mega alliance involving former PDP and Labour Party figures—including loyalists of Atiku and Obi—who are reportedly seeking a common political platform ahead of the next general elections.
As the political landscape continues to shift, Abejide made it clear he would resist any form of internal coup against the party’s foundational values and leadership: “The ADC is not for sale, and it will not be hijacked by outsiders.”
