According to Al Jazeera, The Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, has claimed responsibility for a major military operation targeting Israeli soldiers near Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. In a statement issued on May 20, the group detailed what it described as a “complex operation” carried out inside a house in the town of al-Qarara, located east of Khan Younis city.
According to the Qassam Brigades, their fighters rigged the house with multiple high-explosive devices and detonated them while Israeli soldiers were inside, causing the structure to collapse. The group asserted that the attack resulted in significant casualties among the enemy forces, with both deaths and injuries reported.
The statement added that as additional Israeli soldiers arrived at the scene to respond, Qassam fighters detonated a tunnel shaft, further targeting the reinforcements. A direct firefight then ensued, with the Qassam Brigades engaging the Israeli troops using light weapons.
The group also claimed to have observed Israeli military helicopters landing at the site in order to evacuate the wounded and dead, underscoring the severity of the incident. The Israeli military has not yet released an official statement confirming the details of the attack or the number of casualties. However, Israeli media did report a “security incident” in the area on the same day, including the use of helicopters for casualty evacuation, which aligns with the claims made by the Qassam Brigades.
