In a recent video shared on Signature TV from 13:39, public affairs commentator Ikechukwu Onyia reflected on his past interactions with Nnamdi Kanu, emphasizing efforts to steer the activist away from violent actions and inter-ethnic abuse.

According to Onyia, “We told Nnamdi Kanu, ‘Don’t be violent; if you must continue, stop abusing other tribes.’ He said, ‘Ok’” recalling a delegation visit in 2017 where they personally urged Kanu to avoid violence and promote peaceful activism. Onyia noted that the conversation was part of broader attempts to guide Kanu toward non-violent means of addressing grievances in the Southeast.

He explained that despite these warnings, Kanu later engaged in activities that escalated insecurity in the region, including ordering attacks on security personnel, threatening civilians, and promoting shutdowns that disrupted economic and social life. Onyia argued that these actions undermined the earlier agreement and caused widespread harm to communities and businesses across the Southeast.

Onyia also stressed that the Southeast has seen significant improvements in security since Kanu’s conviction, with residents now able to carry out daily activities freely without fear of intimidation or forced compliance with shutdown orders. He highlighted that local economies and public institutions are gradually returning to normal operations.

He concluded that the advice given to Kanu in 2017 underscores the missed opportunity for peaceful resolution, asserting that had the guidance been followed, much of the region’s recent turmoil could have been avoided. View, More,
