APC Chieftain and former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives Honourable Farouk Aliyu has alleged that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s claim that he can transform Nigeria within four years is a naive rhetoric from someone who doesn’t understand presidential responsibilities.
Speaking in an interview with Arise TV from 17:02, Aliyu drew from his own experience as an opposition figure to illustrate how perspectives change once politicians assume office. “You see, sometimes when you’re out of office or if you’re not in a place, you will not know certain things. To me, it’s just rhetoric, and he’s also trying to convince people that look, just give me one time, four years, I’ll do the work,” he stated.
The former House leader provided a specific example of how opposition positions can be based on incomplete understanding of governance realities. “Let me give you a classical example. When we were in the opposition, myself, late president, the president, so many leaders were on the streets of Abuja and all over this country, Save Nigeria Group, demonstrating against fuel hike in this country. Now, some of the things we did, we didn’t know.
We were naive because we’re not in the office. When President Buhari took over, he increased the price of pump price about three, four times. When Tinubu came, he removed the subsidy completely. Now, when they got into office, we as a government, we realized that what Jonathan wanted to do about the subsidy was right, so Obi is talking out of ignorance. He does not know,” he explained.
He emphasizes the difference between state and federal governance responsibilities. “The state is different from Nigeria. When you govern a small state, it’s different from governing an entire nation. The horizon of a state governor is not as wide as the horizon of a president,” he said.
