In a passionate address captured in a video shared by Sahara TV from 0:49, Labour Party National Chairman Julius Abure has expressed deep disappointment over what he described as betrayal by some key party members.
Abure revealed that during the 2023 general elections, the party leadership made enormous sacrifices including rejecting financial inducements amounting to billions of naira, all in a bid to support the candidacy of Peter Obi and uphold the party’s values.
“We laid down our lives for some of them, and I will say it openly,” Abure stated. “We rejected billions of naira, we rejected offers because of their position, but today, they are in the forefront of those that want to throw us out of office.”
The Labour Party chairman did not mince words as he called out internal actors who, he said, benefited from the collective struggle but are now allegedly working to unseat the current leadership. The statement is seen as a veiled reference to recent internal wrangling within the party which has been plagued by factional disputes and calls for leadership changes.
Abure’s emotional remarks highlight growing tensions within the party, particularly as it seeks to solidify its position as a major political force following the 2023 elections where its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, garnered significant nationwide support.
Political observers say the video underscores the challenges facing the Labour Party as it attempts to balance loyalty, internal democracy, and the ambitions of its expanding base.
Abure’s declaration may rally grassroots supporters who view the chairman and his team as the true architects of the party’s recent political rise. However, it also signals deeper divisions that may impact the party’s stability ahead of future elections.
