The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been facing a wave of internal crises, resulting in the resignation of several prominent members. Among them was the party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who reportedly stepped down last week, citing serious concerns over the lack of internal democracy within the party.
In response to the development, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro spoke during an interview with The Nation, alleging that many of those who were leaving the PDP were themselves contributors to the problems plaguing the party. He also asserted that the North should not expect to produce a president until 2031.
When asked whether he had anticipated Atiku Abubakar’s departure from the PDP, Moro admitted that he had not expected it. However, he noted that, as political scholars often say, politics is the art of the possible. According to him, anything can happen in politics.
He explained that if Atiku had found new political alignments or formations and chose to abandon the PDP, it was a reflection of how unpredictable political crises can be. Moro concluded that the events surrounding Atiku’s exit demonstrated clearly that, in politics, nothing is impossible.
Further talking, he said, “And I can tell you this, for quite some time, quite frankly, for those of us in the PDP, we knew quite all right that he was on his way out of the party, because for quite some time now, he has not been attending the activities of the Peoples Democratic Party.”
