Senate President Godswill Akpabio has criticized former National Assembly clerks for allegedly attempting to use media pressure to challenge their tenure completion, specifically calling out planned protests at a popular radio station.
Speaking during a media session covered by Symfoni TV, Sen. Akpabio addressed rumors of planned protests: “We got an intelligence that some people are going to Berekete radio to protest.”
The Senate President questioned the legitimacy of such actions: “Nigeria has not established human rights radio. If it’s going to be established, it will be established by law or by the executive; nothing like that. We have Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria; we don’t have human rights radio.”
While acknowledging media rights, Sen. Akpabio expressed concern about specific tactics: “Every media house has a right to propagate issues of Human Rights. Some said they want to take the leadership of the National Assembly to a radio station because they have not done ABCD.”
He further placed the responsibility for the situation on the administrative oversight: “I believe that unnecessary politicization of the tenure of your staffs is due to the action and inaction of the National Assembly Service Commission. Because if you were firm and applied the provisions of the act to the letter, nobody would dare stay 1 hour longer in office.”
