According to Punch News, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has forecasted a significant defeat for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 presidential election if Governor Seyi Makinde is chosen as its flag bearer.
This came in response to Governor Makinde’s statement on Tuesday, where he expressed readiness to contest for the presidency in 2027.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Makinde pointed to his achievements in Oyo State and emphasised that he had the qualities necessary to lead Nigeria.
“I have no doubt about my ability to hold the highest office in the country. I believe I have what it takes,” the governor said.
“However, is this the path I want to take right now? Is this what Nigerians are calling for? Is it what my party wants? I can’t say for sure. There’s still a long way to go.”
Although the governor attempted to downplay any immediate political ambitions, his comments sparked criticism from the Oyo APC, which dismissed his potential candidacy as a fatal move for the PDP.
In an interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday, the Oyo APC Publicity Secretary, Olawale Shadare, said it was unimaginable that the PDP, once a dominant force in Nigerian politics, had become a platform for individuals of all kinds.
Shadare warned that presenting Makinde as its presidential candidate would only lead the PDP down a path of failure and political extinction.
“We urge him (Makinde) to go ahead and pursue the PDP’s presidential ticket for the 2027 elections,” Shadare said.
“It’s unfortunate that the same PDP that governed Nigeria for 16 years has now turned into a laughingstock in the hands of certain individuals.”
He said, “We do not wish the PDP dead, but if they choose to bury the umbrella party by putting its destiny in the hands of people like Governor Seyi Makinde, good luck to them,”
