According to a report published by Vanguard on August 6, 2025, the Igbo Women Assembly (IWA) has strongly criticized the Minister of Works, David Umahi, for his recent remarks perceived as dismissive of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi. The group expressed deep disappointment that a prominent Igbo leader like Umahi would attempt to undermine the aspirations of millions of Nigerians rallying behind one of their own.

IWA, a respected socio-political group advocating for equity and good governance, condemned Umahi’s statements as divisive and unpatriotic. They argued that rather than joining the growing national support for Obi, Umahi and others in the Igbo political elite continue to isolate themselves from the people’s demand for change.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the group said:

“We don’t know why Igbo political elite cannot join the rest of Nigerians in supporting one of their own, who the rest of the country, today, seems to be rooting for. The suffering masses of Nigeria, irrespective of their tribe and religion, believe in taking back their country, and they will disappoint Umahi and his likes.”

The IWA emphasized that Obi’s candidacy has become a symbol of national rebirth, especially for Nigerian youths and the working class. They described the former Anambra governor as a unifying figure whose appeal cuts across ethnicity and religion, a rare feat in Nigeria’s polarized political landscape.

The group further urged political leaders from the South East to rise above personal ambition and political affiliations to support a candidate who represents competence, credibility, and the voice of ordinary Nigerians.

According to IWA, the time has come for leaders to reflect the will of the people rather than serve narrow interests. They warned that history would judge harshly those who stand against a movement that has inspired hope in a country long weighed down by poor leadership and corruption.
