Hashim Garba, a victim of the Gallari mass arrest, has revealed he was held for eleven years without being informed of any charges against him.
Speaking to Trust TV, Garba described over a decade of uncertainty and detention that took him through multiple facilities across the region. His testimony exposes what appears to be an extraordinary case of prolonged arbitrary detention.
“We didn’t know anything, we were just kept there,” Garba stated, describing the initial years of his confinement. He went on to detail his journey through the detention system: “We were kept for eleven years, then taken to Gombe where we stayed for 9 months before being brought here.”
The revelation that detainees were held for more than a decade without apparent trial or formal charges has prompted immediate calls for investigations from legal advocacy groups. Such prolonged detention without judicial process would constitute a fundamental violation of constitutional rights and international human rights standards.
Garba’s account suggests systemic failures in the legal system, raising questions about how dozens of individuals could remain in custody for years without access to courts or legal representation. The additional nine-month period in Gombe before transfer to their current location indicates continued movement through detention facilities without resolution of their cases.
Human rights organizations have described the allegations as deeply troubling, noting that eleven years represents a significant portion of a person’s life spent in limbo without due process. Legal experts emphasize that even in security-related cases, detainees must be promptly brought before judicial authorities and informed of charges against them.
The revelations have intensified demands for comprehensive reviews of all cases connected to the Gallari operation, with advocates calling for immediate access to detention records and detainee lists to establish the full scope of potential violations. See, More, Here>>>
