The newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Major General Waidi Shaibu, has shared how the Nigerian Army achieved major victories against Boko Haram terrorists and how he plans to improve the force moving forward.
According to a report by Channels News on Wednesday October 29, 2025, speaking during his Senate screening on Wednesday, Major General Shaibu recalled his time as a commanding officer in Borno State, one of the regions most affected by insurgency. He said that during his tenure, the Nigerian Army successfully defeated many Boko Haram fighters, leading to the surrender of several others.
“We defeated Boko Haram insurgents in 2015 and a significant number of terrorists surrendered during my tenure,” he said.
He explained that the Army made good use of technology to strengthen operations and track terrorists. For the past five years, he has been deeply involved in key missions that helped reduce the number of terrorist groups in the country.
Shaibu also spoke about his long-term plans for the Nigerian Army. He said his leadership will focus on improving the welfare of soldiers and ensuring their career growth. According to him, when troops are well taken care of, they perform better in defending the nation.
The Army Chief further promised to confront a new bandit group known as Lakurawa, which has been causing trouble in parts of northern Nigeria. He said the fight against insecurity requires everyone’s cooperation, not just the military.
Shaibu emphasized that although security operations are expensive, the Army will make the best use of available resources to protect Nigerians and maintain peace across the country. View, More,
