South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has reacted to the United States President Donald Trump’s decision to freeze global aid for 90 days to Africa. A move that threatens crucial HIV and AIDS programs in Africa’s most affected nation.

In a broadcast on TVC from 1:27, President Ramaphosa emphasized his country’s determination to overcome this challenge. “We are not daunted to navigate our path through this world that constantly changes,” he declared. “We will not be deterred. We are South Africans, we are a resilient people, and we will not be bullied.”

The South African leader expressed particular concern about the impact on his country’s healthcare system: “We are concerned about the potential impact of the decision by the United States government to suspend some of its funding for HIV and TB programs in African countries for 90 days,” he stated. “This funding that we get accounts for about 17% of our country’s HIV [programs].”

The stakes are particularly high for South Africa, which hosts one of the world’s largest HIV-positive populations, with an estimated 8.5 million people living with the virus. The U.S. aid freeze was implemented through an executive order on Trump’s second inauguration day.

This three-month suspension of foreign aid is already disrupting South Africa’s HIV and AIDS epidemic control efforts. There are palpable fear over the treatment continuity for millions of affected individuals.
