According to Vanguard, Blessing Agbomhere, the South South Zonal Organizing Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has issued a strong warning to social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, urging him to separate genuine activism from defamatory attacks.
This came in response to a recent three-minute viral video in which VeryDarkMan harshly criticized the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, for attending the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome as part of a federal government delegation.
In the video, VeryDarkMan described Senator Akpabio’s participation in the Vatican event as “shameful.”
He argued that “the President of the Senate lacked the moral standing to attend the Pope’s funeral when he would have used less time to visit Benue, Plateau, Kwara, Ogun and Enugu states that are currently under attacks by marauding herdsmen which has led to the death of scores of innocent Nigerians.”
Reacting to this statement, Agbomhere defended Akpabio and condemned VeryDarkMan’s remarks as unfounded and damaging.
In a statement released on Sunday, he warned the influencer to refrain from “slandering law-abiding and critical stakeholders in project Nigeria, all in the name of activism.”
He emphasized that the attack on Akpabio was not only unnecessary but also misinformed.
Agbomhere further criticized VeryDarkMan’s public behavior, stating, “This individual known as VeryDarkMan is now notorious for blackmail, slander and character assassination while pretending to be an advocate for the masses and social crusader.”
According to him, the social media personality has developed a pattern of launching baseless attacks against high-ranking individuals under the pretense of social activism.
He called the criticism of Akpabio “just another pointless, unfounded, and ignorant rant—this time aimed at Nigeria’s third-highest-ranking official, who didn’t choose to go to Rome on his own but was officially nominated by President Bola Tinubu to head a respected five-member delegation representing Nigeria at the Pope’s funeral. What exactly is wrong with that?”
Agbomhere emphasized that Akpabio’s journey was an official assignment, sanctioned by the President, and thus should not be the subject of public ridicule or condemnation.
He argued that criticizing a government official for performing such a diplomatic role shows a lack of understanding and respect for national representation and protocol.
Issuing a direct demand, Agbomhere said, “I am, with this statement, issuing VeryDarkMan a one week ultimatum to immediately tender an unreserved apology to the President of the Senate for the slanderous comments and to desist from further bringing the integrity of the President Bola Tinubu led administration into disrepute in the eyes of the global community.”
Through this statement, Agbomhere not only defended Akpabio’s official conduct but also called for more responsible behavior from public figures who comment on national matters.
He stressed that while activism is a key part of democracy, it should not cross the line into defamation or character assassination, especially when aimed at leaders fulfilling presidential assignments.
